Ever since the introduction of iPad to the market, tablets have become something really mainstream. It’s not like the world was devoid of this genre of gadget earlier, but the Cupertino giant’s rendition of the device made it a worldwide phenomenon, making it lucrative to even those people who’d have otherwise not found any use for a tablet PC. Jumping onto the bandwagon, Android entered the arena too, and today, there are more Android tablets available on the market than you’d care to count.

'Tis the season to be jolly, as the saying goes; but within some of the biggest technology companies, it's more like the time to be leaving. After Scott Forstall's departure from Apple at the end of last month following decades of service to the Cupertino company, Microsoft's Steven Sinofsky also decided it was time to call it a day at Microsoft, having helped bring the Surface and Windows 8 to market. Now Damien Dinning, head of Nokia's imaging department, has opted to leave the Finnish company, just weeks after the release of the flagship Lumia 920 on Windows Phone 8.

It seems that every company in the smartphone and tablet industry is making some kind of announcement or holding an event to present a new product or service to the media at the minute. I'm pretty sure it doesn't have anything to do with the fact that Apple is widely speculated to be introducing the next-generation iPhone in the next nine days, but putting cynicism aside, Nokia and Microsoft is the latest companies to make their own exciting announcement in the next few days.
