Research firm Strategy Analytics today announced the results of its calculations of worldwide tablet shipments during the fourth quarter of 2011, revealing that Apple continues to hold a majority of the market as Android improves its standing on the strength of Amazon's Kindle Fire. Peter King, Director at Strategy Analytics, said, “Global tablet shipments reached an all-time high of 26.8 million units in Q4 2011, surging 150 percent from 10.7 million in Q4 2010.

Apple Gearing Up for iPhone 5 Production Ahead of Summer Launch? [Updated]

9to5Mac reports that it has received word from a "reliable" source at Foxconn that Apple is gearing up to begin production of the iPhone 5, suggesting that the company could be pushing for a mid-year launch more in line with pre-iPhone 4S debuts. The source said various sample devices are also floating around (which vary slightly from one another) so it is impossible to tell which one will be the final. Some things in common with all of them, however, are: - 4+ inch display (made by LG on at least one of them) - No teardrop-shaped devices as were rumored in the lead up to the iPhone 4S.

Steve Jobs Met with Light Field Camera (Lytro) Company’s CEO

In the upcoming Inside Apple book by Adam Lashinsky , it's revealed that Steve Jobs had expressed interest and subsequently met with the CEO of Lytro , the makers the first light field camera. The relevant book quote posted by 9to5Mac states: The company’s CEO, Ren Ng, a brilliant computer scientist with a PhD from Stanford, immediately called Jobs, who picked up the phone and quickly said, “if you’re free this afternoon maybe we would could get together.” Ng, who is thirty-two, hurried to Palo Alto, showed Jobs a demo of Lytro’s technology, discussed cameras and product design with him, and, at Jobs’s request, agreed to send him an email outlining three things he’d like Lytro to do with Apple. Lytro received a lot of press last year when the first of its light field cameras went on sale in October.
