RIM to hand out BlackBerry 10 prototype smartphones in May

Research In Motion will give prototype BlackBerry 10 smartphones to as many as 2,000 developers who attend the BlackBerry 10 Jam conference that runs alongside the annual BlackBerry World expo in early May. The handsets will be prototypes that are running “a modified version of the PlayBook OS which will help developers design their apps for the BlackBerry 10 smartphone form factor,” a RIM spokesperson told BGR. The device will not be an early version of a device intended for release, RIM clarified.

Bloomberg reports that Apple's iPhone surpassed RIM's BlackBerry as the number one in Canadian smartphone shipments in 2011. RIM is based in Canada and has had strong loyalty amongst its customers. RIM, based in Waterloo, Ontario, shipped 2.08 million BlackBerrys last year in Canada, compared with 2.85 million units for Apple, data compiled by IDC and Bloomberg show

Speaking at GeekWire’s technology summit in Seattle, T-Mobile’s chief marketing officer Cole Brodman voice some strong opinions regarding carrier subsidies, claiming they are hurting the mobile industry. “It actually distorts what devices actually cost and it causes OEMs, carriers — everybody to compete on different playing fields, and I think it is really difficult, especially from a consumer perspective, because it causes consumers to devalue completely the hardware they are using.” he said.
