Viddy gets celebrity backing from Will Smith, Jay-Z companies

Video-sharing app Viddy got a pretty nice financial boost on Monday, with backing from production companies that Jay-Z (Roc Nation) and Will Smith (Overbrook Entertainment) head. The New York Times says they join $6 million in funding that Viddy received from traditional venture capitalists in February. Norton, better known for its antivirus software, is attempting to take on AgileBits' 1Password with the release of Identity Safe , a password manager for the Mac. Like 1Password, it takes over the task of remembering passwords and generating new ones, keeping the information stored in the cloud.

We were excited about The Hit List a few years ago, with the beta showing a lot of promise, and version 1.0 finally was released in 2011 . Now the task-manager software has been updated to version 1.1 for both Mac and the iPhone with the following new features: iPhone version The ability to create folders and tag bundles The ability to create repeating tasks Mac version Create new tasks in the Quick Entry window based on the context of the foreground application New menu items for items due today, opening links in notes and copy with notes Shortcut keys to change task priority and to tie in with the new menu items The sidebar can be hidden The software is signed with Apple's Developer ID certificate in preparation for Mountain Lion.

Apple’s additional security steps could be better

As we've been hearing, Apple is rolling out some "additional security" for App Store customers . When you go to purchase an app, as I just did (it was the free Pocket app, incidentally), you may be prompted to answer three security questions and provide a second email address in case your primary account is compromised.

As Apple prepares to go to trial to fight the US Department of Justice's claims that the Cupertino company conspired to fix ebook prices with publishers , former publisher of the Wall Street Journal L. Gordon Crovitz has an interesting oped in today's paper which he says that Apple's 30% profit sharing "agency model" with ebook publishers does not amount to the price fixing conspiracy that the DOJ accuses the company of.

Apple makes a tax deal for Prineville, Oregon data center land

We've heard before that Apple plans to build a data center on land it previously purchased in Oregon, but now the Associated Press reports on part of the cost. The company has reportedly agreed to pay US$150,000 per year to local governments, and has signed off on at least 35 jobs
